The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (the Act) was signed by President Bush in June of 2001. The Act provides for across-the-board tax relief for all taxpayers. You may recall that married couples received rebate checks of up to $600, while single filers received up to $300 in the summer of 2001. Those cuts are still in effect and have continued to lower your federal taxes. The Act provided for multi-year rate reductions, so your federal tax liability will continue to decrease in the future. Additionally, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has also reduced it's tax rate by more than 10% since 2001.
To put these cuts into perspective, a married couple with two children, a $75,000 salary and who own a home, saw their federal income tax liability decrease from $7,649 in 1999 to $6,062 in 2002. This represents a reduction of $1,587 or 21%, more than enough to cover the increase proposed by the proposition 2 1/2 override. These detailed income tax returns are listed below.
